Keeping with its tradition of honouring noted personalities from across the globe, Google on Monday dedicated their special 'doodle' to BKS Iyengar, founder of the style of yoga known as 'Iyengar yoga'.

Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar, popularly known as BKS Iyengar was born on 14 December 1918 in Bellur, Karnataka and passed away on 20 August 2014. He was 95 years old at that time.

According to an article in the Mirror, Iyengar suffered from poor health and at the age of 15 one of his brother-in-laws, who ran a yoga school in Mysore, invited him to improve his health through yoga practice.

But Iyengar gathered international fame only in the early 1950s, after he introduced renowned violinist Yehudi Menuhin to the art. Now, his studios situated in in 72 countries teach ways to improve breathing, concentration and meditation.

Iyengar, who has written many books on the philosophy and practice of yoga, led a very simple life, says an earlier HuffPost India article.

In 2004, Iyengar was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine.
