PM Narendra Modi reaches out to opposition, says 'consensus is the only way forward'
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday reached out to the opposition saying consensus is the only way forward and praising the role of all previous governments in the growth of India.
Speaking during the debate on 'Commitment to the Constitution' in the Lok Sabha, PM Modi said majority in the House does not mean imposing someone's will.
"We should work more through consensus and not through majority-minority," PM Modi said, adding, "Consensus is the biggest strength of our democracy."
Strongly rejecting any idea of Constitution review, the PM said "the thought of tampering with the Constitution is like committing suicide."
Praising the role of all the previous governments, PM Modi said, "This nation is made by so many people, all the governments"
"No one can say that the earlier governments have not done anything for this country.
I am not saying this today; I have said this from the Red Fort," Modi said.
PM Modi said India was not made by 'maharajas' (kings) but the common people and all the governments.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also rejected the Congress contention that the NDA government was trying to deny due credit or undermining the role of leaders like Jawahar Lal Nehru.
During his speech, he heaped rich praise on opposition leaders including Pandit Nehru as he cited the spirit with which the leaders worked in the past in Parliament.
