NEW DELHI -- Media tycoon Peter Mukerjea, husband of Indrani Mukerjea, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation on Thursday night in connection with the Sheena Bora murder case.
Indrani Mukerjea is the prime accused in the murder case of her 24-year-old daughter. The other suspects in the case are Indrani's ex- husband Sanjeev Khanna and her former driver Shyamvar Rai.
Bora was allegedly strangled inside a car in Mumbai in April 2012 and her body was dumped in the neighbouring Raigad forest.
Earlier in the day, the CBI filed a chargesheet in a magistrate's court in Mumbai against Indrani, Khanna and Rai.
Peter Mukerjea was called in for questioning by the CBI on Thursday.
It is not clear why Mukerjea has been arrested, but initial reports suggest that he knew more about the murder case than he has revealed to the Mumbai police in past interrogations.
Citing sources, The Indian Express reported that Mukerjea has been arrested because he was aware of the murder, and there are inconsistencies in his statement to the CBI.
The Economic Times reported that he was arrested on charges of "abetment," and the CBI is also examining the possibility whether their was a financial motive to murder including sharing of properties belonging to Peter and Indrani.
Mukerjea's lawyer, Mahesh Jethmalani, was caught unawares about his arrest.
“I will be extremely shocked if the news about his arrest is true," he said. “I contacted him through messages and my last contact was well past 7.30 PM when he informed me that he was being questioned by the CBI and that he would contact me later."
Peter Mukerjea will be produced in a Mumbai court on Friday.
