NEW DELHI -- Stung by allegations that he had registered himself as a British citizen to set up a company in London, an irate Rahul Gandhi today lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding that he stop using his cronies to attack his family.

"Since I was born, people from RSS and BJP have been throwing dirt at my grandmother, my father and even my mother. Different kinds of allegations are levelled against me," Gandhi said, speaking at a function to mark the 98th birth anniversary of his grandmother Indira Gandhi.

"There is no truth in them," he said.

Earlier this week, Bharatiya Janata Party's firebrand leader Subramanian Swamy sent a letter to Modi alleging that Gandhi was a British citizen, and demanding that he should be stripped of his Indian citizenship.

On Wednesday, Subramanian alleged that Gandhi's firm in London was shell company for defence kickbacks.

Gandhi, vice president of the Congress Party, did not make a direct reference to Swamy's allegations, but he dared Modi to set up an investigation, and vowed to go to jail if he was actually convicted of wrongdoing.

"Modi ji has all agencies at his disposal as the PM. So order an investigation and complete these probes within six months? Show your 56-inch chest." Gandhi said. "Modi ji, I'm not the least bit scared of you."

Adding fuel to fire, senior advocate H.S. Phoolka, who has pursued cases against Congress Party leaders in connection with the 1984 Anti Sikh Riots for two decades, said that Rajiv Gandhi's Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, should be revoked since his party was responsible for the communal violence.

"A PM whose party was responsible for a massacre cant be a Bharat Ratna, we demand Rajiv Gandhi's Bharat Ratna's be taken back," he said, ANI reported.
