The incessant rainfall in Tamil Nadu has claimed 71 lives so far, with the state capital recording 23.5cm rainfall between 8am on Sunday and 8am on Monday, the highest in Chennai in a 24-hour window since 1976, reported The Times of India.
To get control over the worsening situation, helicopters and armed forces have been called in for rescue operations by the administration, while chief minister J Jayalalitha announced a relief package of Rs 500 crore for the state.
The state government has also asked educational institutions to remain closed in 15 districts until the situation improves.
