As Diwali, the festival of lights approaches, most Indians wait eagerly for the diyas (clay lamps), lanterns, new clothes, gifts, sweets and of course the fireworks.

But as most dog owners know, Diwali can be a trying time for their pets because of the loud firecrackers and the odour of smoke encircling their neighbourhood. Incessant barking or whimpering is the only way the dogs can show their discomfort, which in turn annoys the neighbours.

In a series of evocative pictures, a website called The Hippieque, has tried to capture the feelings of dogs in a series of snapshots and a video with the theme:

If I had a chance to speak once in my life...

The Supreme Court last week refused to ban the bursting firecrackers this Diwali. However, a bench of Chief Justice HL Dattu and Justice Arun Kumar said the apex court had issued a series of directions on the same in 2005 according to which crackers ought not to be burst after 10:00 pm.
