NEW DELHI -- Just a few days after two Dalit children were burnt alive as a consequence of intercaste violence in Haryana, a teenage Dalit boy, accused of stealing pigeons, was found dead in Gohana town of Sonepat district on Thursday.

Govind's family has alleged that he was beaten up by police personnel who questioned him about the pigeons. Following a protest in which locals blocked the road and railway track for over three hours, two police personnel were booked for murder.

The family also alleges that the local policemen had taken a bribe of Rs10,000 for Govind's release, but they did not release him.

The police personnel say that Govind committed suicide.

Even before the probe could be concluded, Haryana Chief Minister M.L. Khattar dismissed concerns about caste violence, and said that Govind committed suicide.

"A suicide was committed in the night. The official postmortem report is yet to come," he told the media on Friday afternoon.
