Come Vijayadashami or Dussehra, and the country sees an explosion of Ravanas, each more painstakingly made than the other, and stuffed to the gills with crackers just waiting to explode.
In recent years, however, a more artistic trend has set in when it comes to creating giant effigies of the fearsome King of Lanka. Instead of intimidating expressions, Ravana 'artists' have taken to bathing their oeuvres in bright, almost psychedelic hues that range from acid greens to bewildering pinks, and glaring blues. These vivid works of art certainly seem to be doing the task of attracting the masses, and it's almost (but not quite) a pity to think that they'll be burnt down soon enough.
