India In Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship Is Off To A Good Start

PUNE -- Indian women started with a bang, winning 12 gold medals in various weight categories of the 2015 Commonwealth Youth, Junior & Senior weightlifting championships today.

In 48 kg junior women's category, Sanjita Chanu lifted 81 kg in snatch (silver) and 101 kg in clean & jerk (gold) for a total of 182 kg to clinch the gold medal, while S Mirabai Chanu picked up 81 kg in snatch (gold) and 100 kg in clean and jerk (silver) for an overall 181 kg to settle for silver.

The third place in this category went to Toua Thelma of Papua New Guinea.

In 48 kg Youth Girls division, Mohini Chavan won the gold with a total lift of 146 kg (61+85), thus bagging yellow metal in all three categories. Pooja Gupta claimed the silver medal after lifting 141 kg (60+81), winning the second position each in snatch, clean & jerk and overall.

In 44 kg Youth Girls section, T Priyadarshini clinched the gold with a lift of 128 kg (53+75) to claim the top position in all three categories.
