We've all grown up listening to the Indian national anthem. But this video, titled, Bharoto Bhagyo Bidhata, of the legendary original composed and scored by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, puts a mesmerizing spin on it. It touches on important issues such as feminism, the India-Pakistan divide and India's freedom struggle.
The shorter version of the entire Bharoto Bhagyo Bidhata song was adopted by the Constituent Assembly as the national anthem of India on January 24, 1950. It was first sung on December 27, 1911 at the Kolkata Session of the Indian National Congress.
Directed by critically-acclaimed filmmaker Srijit Mukherji and produced by Shree Venkatesh Films, the song Bharoto Bhagyo Bidhata uses the original and complete Bengali lyrics written by Tagore -- consisting of all the five stanzas -- for the song. But officially, only the first paragraph, which takes less than a minute to recite, is sung all over the country as the national anthem.
The song, which begins from the second paragraph and then moves on to the first, is a part of Mukherji's upcoming Bengali film Rajkahini. Starring Rituparna Sengupta, Jisshu Sengupta, and Saswata Chatterjee in lead roles, the song has been sung by more than ten noted singers.
Rajkahini, a Bengali film, is set to hit theatres this October.
