Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Jagmohan Dalmiya, who was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata after complaining of chest pain three days ago, passed away today following a massive cardiac arrest at the age of 75.

Dalmiya was admitted to the BM Birla Heart Research Institute on Thursday. PTI reported that later that same night his condition improved after an emergency angiography.

Dalmiya, who served as former International Cricket Council (ICC) chief between 1997 to 2000, returned to head the BCCI in March this year after he was elected unopposed. He is widely thought to have made cricket profitable and elevated it to the status of a national obsession.

"Mr. Dalmiya died of internal gastrointestinal bleeding and internal organ failure," hospital sources told PTI.

Cricket Association of Bengal sources added: "At 6 PM in the evening his condition deteriorated and shortly afterwards he suffered a massive cardiac arrest from which he could not recover."

Dalmiya has not been keeping well for a while now and was not actively taking part in the day-to-day functioning of the BCCI.

BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur confirmed the news on Twitter and said "the greatest sports administrator of India has passed away, an era ends. A personal loss to me and Indian cricket."

"I knew Dalmiya Ji for over 15 years. He was a mentor to us all and a true lover of the game. His guidance and passion was immense," he said.

Dalmiya has been ailing since his re-election and his health had deteriorated further over the last few weeks, reports said.

PTI sources claimed Thakur and IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla will reach Kolkata tomorrow. (With inputs from PTI)
