Much like its advent in Left-dominant Kerala, the BJP is making a gradual, but discernible presence in university polls across key Delhi campuses. For the first time in 14 years, an Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad--the BJP's student wing-- candidate--Saurabh Sharma-- won the post of joint secretary in Left-majority Jawaharlal Nehru University Polls.

Though the ABVP won only a single seat in the JNU elections, it follows their Saturday-sweep of the Delhi University Students' Union polls, retaining all four top posts for the second consecutive year defeating Congress-backed NSUI while AAP's CYSS finished third in the vote count in its debut.

The ABVP bagged the posts of president, vice-president, secretary and joint secretary defeating National Students' Union of India (NSUI) candidates with a margin of over 4,500 votes each in the fiercely fought contest.

The Left-backed All India Student's Federation candidate, Kanhaiya Kumar, was declared the president of the JNU students union after the results were announced on Sunday.

"Kanhaiya Kumar, who won the race for the union president's post, secured a total of 1029 votes defeating AISA's Vijay Kumar, who polled 962 votes and lost the top post by by a margin of 67 votes," the CEC for JNUSU polls Praveen Thallapelli said.

Ultra-left All India Students Association (AISA) bagged two seats in the polls. Shehla Rashid Shora and Rama Naga were elected as vice-president and general secretary respectively.

Thirty-one councillors belonging to several schools in JNU were also elected today.

While seven candidates from major students' organisations were in the fray for the coveted presidential post in the JNUSU, four candidates for the posts of vice-president, six and five nominees for general secretary and joint secretary respectively contested the polls.

Safety on campus and better hostel facilities were among the key issues raised by the contesting parties.
