NEW DELHI -- Haryana today joined four other states - Gujarat, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra - which have banned the sale of meat during the Jain festival of Paryushan from September 10 to 17.
On Friday, the meat ban in Maharashtra was reduced from four to two days by the state government after it was reprimanded by the Bombay High Court which described the prohibition as "regressive" and an "inappropriate formula" for a "modern city like Mumbai."
On the same day, the Chhattisgarh government ordered a ban on the sale of meat for the eight-day long fasting period of the Jain festival and Ganesh Chaturthi.
“Like every year, the Urban Administration Department has issued directives to civic bodies to keep all the slaughter houses and meat shops closed from September 10 to 17 for the Jain Paryushan’ Parv and Ganesh Chaturthi,” Jitendra Shukla, a senior official in Chhattisgarh told the Press Trust of India.
The Fatehabad Municipal Corporation in Haryana issued a notice to slaughterhouse owners, warning them of legal action if they violate the order, PTI reported on Saturday.
"This is the first time that such a ban order has been issued. It is ironical why no such order is issued during Navratri," said Salim, spokesperson of the Meat Market Association in Fatehabad.
