These Stunning Sketches Prove How Much Artists Love Elephants

If there was any proof that a special day was needed for elephants, then this is clearly it. These stunning sketches from Pinterest show that these large creatures make for very colourful (let's not forget adorable) muses all over the world, especially for children's art.

The Elephant Reintroduction Foundation declared August 12 World Elephant Day in 2012 in an attempt to create awareness about these animals that are hunted avidly for their tusks, and to help provide more solutions for better care of captive and wild elephants alike (check out the Facebook page here)

Though not as sacred as the cow, elephants also represent an auspicious animal in India (Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles in Indian mythology sports an elephant's head), and form an integral part of celebratory and religious events, especially Indian weddings.

However these sketches prove that it is not just Indians who love these gentle beasts:
