Mumbai Police officials listening in on a landline conversation at the houshold of Yakub Memon, who was found guilty in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case that killed 257 people, on the day of his hanging had enough reasons to feel disquieted.

Ibrahim Mushtaq Abdul Razak Nadim Memon, known simply as Tiger Memon, called up his mother a few hours before Yakub's hanging and spoke of revenge, according to reports.

Tiger Memon is a prime suspect in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case and is one of the most dreaded terrorists and underworld gangster on Interpol and the CBI's watchlist.

On July 30, Tiger's conversation was recorded by the Mumbai Police. According to a transcript that the Economic Times claims to have access to, he allegedly threatened to avenge Yakub's death.

Recently, Chhota Shakeel, one of the key accused in the case, told Times of India that India committed "legal murder" and closed all future doors for negotiations by its intelligence agencies to secure the return of Dawood, who was allegedly the mastermind behind the coordinated attacks.

An aide to underworld kingpin Dawood Ibrahim, Shakeel had threatened that there will be 'consequences' for the hanging of Yakub.

"Dawood bhai would have been meted the same fate if he would have come at that time... it is clear now," Shakeel said.

"What message has the Indian government sent across? You have punished an innocent man for his brother's act. The company condemns it. It's a legal murder," Shakeel said. "Woh (consequences) to hoga hi," he said referring to possible backlash.

Memon, a chartered accountant, was hanged shortly before 7:00 am on Thursday morning at the Nagpur Central Jail.

The ET report said Mumbai Police officials told their reporters that the call was made using voice over Internet protocol (VOIP) facilities but Internet protocol (IP) address could not be identified as the source of the call kept "bouncing from one IP address to another". The call lasted three minutes.

The man, addressed as 'bhaijaan' by the member of the Yakub household who answered the call, allegedly promised the family that their "tears will not go to waste". Yakub's mother Hanifa is said to have told the caller to stop this violence.

"Bas ho gaya. Pehle ke vajah se mera Yakub gaya ab aur nahi main dekh sakti (Stop this. Due to past incidents I have lost Yakub, I can't stand this anymore), she is quoted as saying in ET.

On record, Yakub's lawyer Shyam Keswani, his household members or Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria did not confirm the call. NDTV said two senior police officers refused to confirm it as well.
