As the Indian government began its crackdown on pornographic content, supplying internet companies with a list of more than 850 websites that had to be restricted, Twitter was buzzing with indignant consumers writing about exactly what they thought of the #pornban.

"We have written to the ISPs (internet service providers) to restrict free and open access to 857 websites. This direction is based on the observations made by the honourable Supreme Court on 10 July and using section 79 (3b) of the IT Act read with Article 19 (2) of the Indian constitution," telecom ministry spokesperson N.N. Kaul told HuffPost India.

Most internet service providers -- Vodafone, MTNL and BSNL -- have blocked porn sites, according to users.

According to Pornhub, arguably the world’s largest porn site, Indians are among the most "prolific consumers" of internet pornography -- accounting for 40% of its 14.2 billion visits -- a report in the Hindustan Times stated.

Twitter users are overcoming the 140 character limit to convey their frustration and despair. Bachelors and hostel residents, who were hit hard after the Maggi ban, are now inconsolable.

Here are some Tweeters who had some fun with the #pornban news.

I didn't even know about many of these 850 or so porn sites so thanks for the info dear Govt. #StreisandEffect#PornBan
