Today, Google's homepage displays a black ribbon that marks a special homage to President Kalam, or 'missile man' as he was often referred to for his leadership role in Indian defence technology. Kalam passed away on July 27 after suffering a heart attack during a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management, Shillong.
Google celebrates important occasions and honours people on special days with touching doodles. For Kalam, it posted a simple black ribbon yesterday that continues to be displayed today, symbolising a man who believed in living life simply.
Other leaders across the world have also paid their respects, including US President Barack Obama, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Obama passed on his condolences saying, "on behalf of the American people, I wish to extend my deepest condolences to the people of India on the passing of former Indian President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. A scientist and statesman, Dr Kalam rose from humble beginnings to become one of India's most accomplished leaders, earning esteem at home and abroad."
Tributes continue to pour in for the noted Indian scientist, two days after his passing.
