NEW DELHI -- Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal asked people to donate funds for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), saying the party has run out of money.

In an interview to ANI, Kejriwal said, “After we came to power, our funds (were) exhausted. Now we want funds to run our party and we want it from the public."

"(Earlier) the public funded us, we never took any money under the table. We gave a record of every rupee we got," the Delhi CM added. Kejriwal said that he is indebted to people for their help, but now needs funds for the party's daily expenses.

Describing himself as a 'bizarre chief minister' for asking for funds, Kejriwal said, "We can get money the wrong way but that is not who we are.”

People on social media aren't too happy with Kejriwal's plea today and criticized the chief minister.

A website that tracks AAP's funding shows how much they have received over the last week.

The AAP stormed to power in elections held in February, bagging 67 of the 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly.

Earlier this year, the BJP had questioned the "conspicuous silence" of Kejriwal on AAP's "dubious" funding, alleging that the party leader's political conduct has been completely contradictory to the standards he had set for himself.

In February, a breakaway AAP Volunteer Action Manch (AVAM) had accused the Kejriwal-led party of receiving Rs 2 crore through four "dubious" companies. The group claimed that the money was donated to AAP on the midnight of April 15 last year.

Kejriwal, in response, had called it a "major conspiracy hatched against me and AAP."
