For Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi, India is the next frontier after its success in China. Now it has cut the price of its flagship phone Mi 4 in India to spur sales of this model following the launch of the Mi 4i.

Hugo Barra, Global Vice President, has said that India is crucial to the company's growth. The company started in India with flash sales on Flipkart, which proved very popular. The phones are now available more widely outside of flash sales events.

The 16 GB variant of the Mi4 was available for Rs.19,999 on Flipkart since its January launch. Starting Wednesday, the price has been cut to Rs 14,999.

The other flagship phone, Mi 4i, made specifically for India and launched in April, retails at Rs 12,999.

Xiaomi is looking to gain more marketshare in the affordable phones category (Rs 5,000 - 15,000) where Samsung and Micromax are the current leaders. Xiaomi's share in this market was only 4 percent according to a study by IDC in December, but has grown quick, and sold a million handsets within six months of starting operations in India. It leads the market for affordable 4G phones.

Last year the company, founded in 2011 by serial entrepreneur Jun Lei, sold 61 million smartphones mainly in China.
