The Web's Meanest Movie Critics Are A Group Of Singing, Dancing Theatre Snacks

Meet The Theatre Snacks Who Also Happen To Be Hilariously Mean Movie Critics

You may pride yourself on being quite the cinephile, but it would be safe to say that if tubs of popcorn or glasses of cola were to suddenly become sentient, they'd probably have watched a lot more films than you have.

This was the germ of an idea that led to the creation Bollywood Singaview, a month-old YouTube channel that puts up musical movie reviews of the latest mainstream Hindi film releases. Performed entirely using hand-puppets, these 'singing reviews' feature four recurring characters: Popcorn, Samosa, Cola, and Burger. Every review features the four characters singing and dancing, vaudeville-style, and coming up with a consensual opinion of a movie.

"The idea was to use 'theatre garbage' to create something that would be entertaining to watch on its own," said Bhargava 'Bugs' Krishna, partner at creative agency 81 and co-founder of production house Bugs Eye View, who came up with the concept. "It's not meant to be personal. It's more of a roast than a review, all in the spirit of good, clean fun and love for the movies."

Indeed, out of five reviews that have been uploaded, four have been hilariously snarky. For instance, the 'Bombay Velvet' review dismisses the film as '1960s ka fancy dress', while the chorus in the one for 'Hamari Adhuri Kahani' goes 'Sunn raha hai na tu, so raha hoon main'. For every episode, Krishna says that the team behind the reviews — which includes writers Sudeep Naik and Samina Motlekar; and music composer Ronit Chatterjee (who also does all the voices) — watches the movie on either Thursday evening or Friday morning and works through the weekend in order to get the review out by Sunday evening.
