Former finance minister P Chidambaram has raised seven questions on the Sushma Swaraj-Lalit Modi scandal to the Narendra Modi government at a press briefing at his residence in Chennai. He urged the government to publish the letters exchanged between him and George Osborne, the then chancellor of the exchequer, on Lalit Modi. He said those letters would clarify most of the issues being debated now.

Here are the seven questions he posed:

1. Why is the government not releasing the letters exchanged between the finance minister (i.e Chidambaram) and the U.K.'s Chancellor of the Exchequer (George Osbourne)?

2. If Sushma Swaraj helped Lalit Modi on humanitarian grounds, why did she not ask him to apply for limited travel documentation at the Indian High Commission in the UK? Why did an Indian minister recommend UK travel documents for an Indian citizen?

3. Why did she not make any concession to Modi conditional on him returning to India?

4. Who took the decision to not file an appeal in the Supreme Court after the High Court's decision against revoking Lalit Modi's passport?

5. Who took the decision to grant Modi a fresh passport?

6. How was Lalit Modi staying in UK when his passport was cancelled, why wasn't he being sent back to India? What has the government done to make sure he respects the summons by the Enforcement Directorate?

7. What about Modi's wild claims that he can't come to India because his life is in danger? Can the NDA government not ensure his safety?
