NEW DELHI --Gurgaon Police has arrested a 40-year-old driver who allegedly attempted to molest a woman passenger who hailed the cab through the cab-booking app Uber.

The 40-year-old driver is a resident of Delhi, the police said in a statement. He has been charged under section 354A of the IPC, which deals with molestation.

The woman passenger has alleged that the driver tried to forcibly kiss her after he dropped her to Gurgaon on Saturday night.

"As soon as I reached Sun CIty, Gurgaon I paid the driver and asked him to give me my bags," she told Gurgaon police in an emailed complaint on Monday night, seen by HuffPost India. "He instead held my hand and kissed it against my will and tried to forcefully do more of it while not letting me go, so I pushed him and took my bags and ran from there."

Gurgaon police have identified the driver and are corroborating the allegations. Police confirmed that Uber officials are cooperating with the investigation.

According to the woman's complaint, she booked the cab on Saturday night at around 9.30 pm, boarding it from west Delhi's Subhash Nagar area, near a mall. She has told police that she was alone in the cab, and as there were some isolated stretches along the way to Gurgaon, decided to shift to the front passenger seat so that she could escape in case of an emergency or pull the handbrakes. It was after she reached Sun City in Gurgaon that the incident took place, she said.

The woman even called a friend afterwards, but she was unable to lodge the complaint on her behalf. It was after discussing it with her brother that she complained to Uber, which she says sent a templated response, following which they posted it on Uber's Facebook page.

After media reports on the matter, an assistant commissioner of police called the woman and asked her to file a complaint.

An Uber driver is facing trial for alleged rape of a passenger in Delhi in December. Uber has since introduced an emergency button in its app which is meant to alert a local police station in the event of an emergency, and also a 'safety net' feature, which allows the passenger to share real time location and trip details to five pre-set contacts.
