PM Narendra Modi has now sent a clear and unequivocal message about hate speech against minorities.
In an interview to news agency UNI on Monday, PM Modi said that hate speeches against minorities were "completely unfortunate and totally uncalled for".
In what is seen as a tough message to various elements of the Sangh Parivar who have been making incendiary statements about minority communities, PM Modi said: "Our Constitution guarantees religious freedom to every citizen -- and that is not negotiable," reported The Times of India.
The prime minister also made it clear that such comments were affecting the image of his government.
"Acche din aak chuke hain, lekin kuch log hamare kaamon ko dhumil karne mein lage hue hain (Good days have arrived but some people are trying to belittle the work done by us," he added.
Since the NDA came to power past year, there has been a slew of statements targetted at minority communities, including from members of Modi's council of ministers. So far he has only said that such comments were not the view of his government.
