Owing to great word-of-mouth and several glowing reviews (ours not included), 'Tanu Weds Manu Returns' has done great business in its opening weekend. The Kangana Ranaut starrer, a sequel to 2011's 'Tanu Weds Manu', collected Rs 38.10 crore over its first three days. This makes it 2015's second-highest opener, after Akshay Kumar starrer 'Gabbar Is Back', which made Rs 40 crore.
BoxOfficeIndia.com, citing its phenomenal day-on-day growth, has declared emphatically that the film could be "the biggest hit of the year and will also emerge the highest grossing film of the year surpassing the figures of Gabbar Is Back".
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted out the figures earned by the film, which show a growth of nearly 100% between its opening day and Sunday. He also noted that the jump took place despite Sunday's IPL final, which would have prevented many from going to theatres.
#TanuWedsManuReturns does MASSIVE biz on Day 3, despite IPL finals. Fri 8.85 cr, Sat 13.20 cr, Sun 16.10 cr. Total: ₹ 38.10 cr. India biz.— taran adarsh (@taran_adarsh) May 25, 2015
He emphatically called the film an "eye-opener".
The jump in the biz of #TanuWedsManuReturns is an eye-opener. Almost doubled the biz on Sun [16.10] vis-à-vis Fri [8.85]. Achhe din aa gaye!— taran adarsh (@taran_adarsh) May 25, 2015
And given that the film's total cost is reportedly only Rs 30 crore (according to Adarsh), the film could well end up being one of the most profitable films this year.
At the speed #TanuWedsManuReturns is sprinting, ₹ 35 cr [+/-] opening weekend is on the cards. Cost [incl P&A]: ₹ 30 cr. FABULOUS!— taran adarsh (@taran_adarsh) May 24, 2015
