Irrfan Khan Speaks About 'Piku', Which Is Breaking 2015 Box-Office Records

Who Is Surprised By The Stupendous Success Of 'Piku'? Not Irrfan Khan

Irrfan Khan is on top of the world. The 48-year-old is ecstatic about the box-office collections of his most recent release, ‘Piku’, which has been declared a “smash-hit” and is now poised to become the highest-grossing film Hindi film worldwide, thanks to its record-breaking international opening.

“I have been looking forward to these times for a while now,” said Khan, in a phone conversation with HuffPost India. “The industry is changing. Writing and treatment are becoming the new stars of a film. It is long overdue.”

He isn’t surprised by the stupendous success of ‘Piku’. “I already knew Juhi [Chaturvedi, the writer of the film] would do a great job, based on her past work," he said. "But when we were shooting, when I saw the humour that was being created from the scenes, the way Shoojit [Sircar, the director] was extracting performances and moulding the film as he was making it… I knew that it would be something special.”

He was so confident about it, in fact, that he said that this was the first film that he didn’t actually watch in its entirety until it was finished and released. “Usually, you’re worried about how a film turns out, how your performance in it turns out,” he says. “But in this case, I didn’t feel the need to do that. I knew we had done a good job.”

While ‘Piku’, now in its second week, continues to pull in and delight audiences, Khan is already gearing up for his upcoming Hollywood release — ‘Jurassic World’ — which opens in theatres on June 12. He’s also preparing to travel to Budapest, Hungary, for two months to shoot for ‘Inferno’, which is being directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Ron Howard. Incidentally, in ‘Jurassic World’, Khan’s co-star is Howard’s daughter, Bryce Dallas Howard.

Being India’s favourite export to the West is clearly going well for Khan, who spends a fair amount of time shooting for international projects. He is now looking to transcend that language barrier too. “When it comes to good roles, I’m like a lover chasing my beloved,” he said, with a laugh. “France, Italy, Mexico, Calcutta [Kolkata], south India — I’ll go to whichever part of the world and act in any language as long as I’m excited by what I’m doing. I’m just chasing stories, really.”
