Since our baby was born, we found a good way to put all those belly pictures to good use. Anyone interested can check out our baby blog at opensourcekids.com/. It is a place for others to learn from our trials and mistakes. Please know that while I very much appreciate your kind words and comments, I no longer have time to respond in-kind to the comments and faves given on my photos. Unfortunately my addition to flickr has to take a back seat to my work and child.

The world celebrates Mother's Day the second Sunday of May every year. Here are some stunning portraits of mothers and their children around the world. To all the mothers out there, and the fathers too who have taken over that role - a happy mother's day.

Tiru is a 25-year-old widowed mother of five, in Miyo, Oromia Region, considered one of the worst affected drought areas in southern Ethiopia. Tiru is pictured with her two six-month-old twins, Gorore and Tadhala and her 9 year old daughter, against the aquamarine-painted wall of an Ethiopian government health clinic in Miyo, Oromia, Ethiopia, 3 August 2011. “I lost my husband when I was pregnant with my twins, due to sickness. We used to work together, we had cattle then. We lost our 2 cattle because of the drought. We also watered crops for the rich farmers. I now do this alone. It is very difficult with two babies to work. My income is much less. I can no longer support my children. My father is old. He was able to support me at the start but now cannot.€ Community health workers from the NGO CARE International visited Tiru’s village a month ago. They advised that the twins needed screening for malnutrition. The twins were then admitted to an outpatients nutrition programme, and provided with plumpy nut (peanut butter with high nutritional content) for 3 weeks. One of them is now ready to be discharged; when she was admitted she weighed 4.5kg, but after 3 weeks she now weighs 5.2 kg. This is considered to be acceptable and she no longer requires support. Her twin sister is almost there. She probably needs another week before she can be discharged from the programme. UK aid is supporting CARE International's nutrition programmes at clinics like this in Oromia, through the UN humanitarian response fund. Image: Tanya Axisa/Department for International Development

  • Beauty ...

I saw her beautiful face while traveling across a crowded town in the North of India, so suddenly that I hardly had time to take the photo. I must confess that this beautiful woman and her child caused me a long-standing impression, might be her eyes...?

A special moment between my wife and my son... It's times like this I wish things would never change. Alas the world spins and time moves on so I will store this in my memories forever.

  • Mother and Child Hand Coloured Ambrotype (Collodion Positive) c. 1860
    whatsthatpicture/Flickr
A lovely 1/6th plate hand coloured ambrotype of a mother and child - c. 1860? I bought this on eBay a good while back now, along with the wonderful named and dated ambrotype of Edmund Baron Hartley VC. I have no reason though to think that she could be connected to him in any way. The soft beautiful tones are really striking, and in part this is because unlike many ambrotypes it has been mounted with the collodion facing to the front and instead of a painted black lacquer back it is a piece of dark brown velour type material. This came with a typical brass matt, cover glass and pinchbeck preserver , but no other outer frame or case, and no markings whatsoever.
  • Mother o' Mine .. Happy Mothers Day
    Nick Kenrick../Flickr
If I were hanged on the highest hill, Mother o' mine, O mother o' mine! I know whose love would follow me still, Mother o' mine, O mother o' mine! If I were drowned in the deepest sea, Mother o' mine, O mother o' mine! I know whose tears would come down to me, Mother o' mine, O mother o' mine! If I were damned of body and soul, I know whose prayers would make me whole, Mother o' mine, O mother o' mine!
