NEW DELHI — IOC President Thomas Bach says India is not ready to bid for the 2024 Olympics but could be a candidate to host the games in the future.

Bach says he was "a little bit surprised" about speculation of a possible Indian bid and believes it would be "a little too quick for India to have successful Olympics in 2024."

Bach spoke after meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who also said India needs to be better prepared before bidding for the Olympics.

Bach says India has huge potential and that the International Olympic Committee would help improve the standard of sport in this country of more than 1.2 billion people.
