Why It's 'Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!' With A 'Y' And Not 'I'

The Simple Reason Why It's 'Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!' And Not '...Bakshi'
Yash Raj Films

Dibakar Banerjee's 'Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!' released in theatres across India on Friday morning and has opened to mixed reviews (check out our take on the film).

The literary character, created by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay, has been spelt Bakshi in all the past adaptations, including the 1993 television series.

Reacting to rumours about the change of spelling being because of copyright issues, HuffPost India spoke to Rafiq Gangjee, vice president of marketing and communication at Yash Raj Films, the producers of the film. He said, "The change in spelling was first and foremost a stylistic choice."

Yash Raj Films actually owns the rights to all 32 episodes of the classic Doordarshan series, directed by Basu Chatterjee, so there is "no question of it being a copyright issue," said Gangjee. A secondary reason, he added, involved the ability to market the film digitally. "Over the years, social media properties named 'Detective Byomkesh Bakshi' have been taken by other people. The change of spelling therefore made even more sense from this point of view," he said.
