It's finally here. Nearly two years since it started shooting, Anurag Kashyap's much-awaited crime drama 'Bombay Velvet' finally has a full-fledged trailer out.

Based on historian Gyan Prakash's book Mumbai Fables, the film is set in the 1970s, when Mumbai was called Bombay, and tells the story of Johnny Balraj, a boxer played by Ranbir Kapoor, and Rosie Noronha, a jazz singer played by Anushka Sharma. Director Karan Johar, usually associated with candyfloss romances, also makes his acting debut and is prominent throughout the trailer as an antagonistic businessman named Kaizad Khambatta.

The trailer, possibly the most awaited of this year so far, boasts of lively background music and detailed production design that seeks to recreate Bombay from the '70s. The film has reportedly been shot in Sri Lanka, but disguised to look like the city (check out that shot at 1:40, featuring old BEST buses and tram rails in what looks like south Mumbai).

This is a far cry from most of Kashyap's filmography — decidedly the most 'masala' film he's ever done. But the well-cut trailer has done its job and we are all intrigued. Bombay Velvet releases in theatres on May 15.

Watch the trailer.
