A 28-year-old Indian man was gunned down at a liquor store in New Jersey on Sunday afternoon Eastern Time. Amit Patel was working in his family store Roseway Liquors in Irvington when an unidentified person shot him dead. Motive for the murder is unclear, and the gunman is still at large.

According to local television reports, Patel was working alone while his father was at the back office of the store.

"Somebody came in, shot him - fell down here," said family friend Rakesh Patel to ABC affiliate WABC-TV.

The channel quoted another family friend Bimal Patel saying, "He's a nice guy - I don't know what happened. Everybody's nervous."

Local media reported that nothing had been stolen, that there was no sign of any struggle, and it didn't appear to be a robbery. The police have surveillance footage from the store, which they are currently examining.

The police have requested anyone with information to call the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force at 1877-TIPS-4-EC.
