A complaint has been filed in a local court accusing US President Barack Obama of "tarnishing India's secular image" with his statements.

Judicial Magistrate Neelima Singh fixed February 18 for hearing the matter.

Complainant Sushil Kumar Mishra, who is an advocate, alleged that Obama had through his reported statement that religious intolerance was on the rise in the country had "tarnished the image of India which is a secular country".

He prayed that Obama be summoned and prosecuted under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code (punishment for defamation).
