Facebook is testing out a Lite version of its Android app, which takes a fraction of the system memory of the original, and is designed for low-bandwidth connections.
The app has been launched on the Google Play Store, but is only available to users in Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Zimbabwe for now. If you’re not residing in one of those eight countries, you can sideload the APK from here.
The Lite version works with smartphones running Android 2.2 and up, and is just 252KB in file size. The default Facebook app, in comparison is 27 MB in size, which is too bloated for both entry-level Android phones and 2G connections. The app integrates Facebook Messenger and lets you share photos as well.
