Malini Parthasarathy, a veteran journalist reporting on political affairs and foreign policy for nearly three decades, was appointed the Editor of The Hindu on Tuesday, the first woman to helm the century-old newspaper.

The Board of Directors of Kasturi and Sons Ltd. (KSL), publishers of The Hindu and Group publications, at its meeting on January 20, unanimously appointed Parthasarathy as the Editor of The Hindu effective February 1, 2015, the newspaper reported.

Parthasarathy will be in charge of all editorial operations, the report stated, adding that N. Ravi, Wholetime Director, will step down from his role as Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu on January 31, 2015.

"The Board also noted that Dr. Malini Parthasarathy has the rare distinction of being The Hindu’s first woman Editor, and wished her the very best in taking The Hindu to greater heights," the report said.

Parthasarathy, who is a cousin of N Ram, former Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu, was the first Indian journalist to interview Pervez Musharraf, then President of Pakistan, in 2000.

She has a doctorate degree from the Centre for Political Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and was earlier the Executive Editor of the paper.
