New Delhi topped the list of India’s most well read cities while Bengaluru, Mumbai and Hyderabad were placed second, third and fourth respectively in Amazon’s 2014 Reading Trend Report released last week.

Among the 15 most well read cities shared by Amazon, Indore was in the 15th position, Kolkata at seventh, overtaking Chandigarh and Jaipur, but below Pune that ranked fifth in the list.

The report also showed Indian writing as the top selling genre across all cities, followed by Children & Young Adults fiction. The latter, according to the report is one of the fastest growing sub-categories. 'The Diary of A Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul' by Jeff Kinney, 'Pran' Comics and Rick Riordan’s 'Blood of Olympus' made it to the top bestsellers list.

Other popular genres were Literary fiction and History & Politics. Amish Tripathi’s ‘Shiva Trilogy’ continued to hold its bestseller position in Hindi, Marathi and Kannada along with ‘The Secret’ (in Tamil) and ‘Yaana’ (in Kannada).

“Amazon.in’s 2014 reading trends bears testimony to the fact that reading culture in India is still alive. It is indeed a matter of great pride that Indian authors are gaining a strong foothold amongst readers and are amongst the most read authors, for the second consecutive year. We are committed to helping our customers enjoy their passion for reading by surfacing them with wide and unique choices across languages, genres and authors,” said Samir Kumar, Director, Category Management, Amazon India.

The readers poll saw Surendra Mohan Pathak’s 'Colaba Conspiracy' (Hindi) reach the top of the reader’s poll as the most popular book of 2014, followed closely with Chetan Bhagat’s 'Half Girfriend', and 'Sorry, You’re Not my Type' by Sudeep Nagarkar.

The report, according to Amazon.in, is compiled on the basis of orders received from the websites Book Store, depicting customer’s choices in different reading genres as well as the authors they prefer. Accumulation of the sales data of all physical books sold last year, helped determine the ranking of the cities.
