Shots were fired in Dammartin-en-Goele outside Paris as security forces chased the suspects in the killing of journalists at French satire magazine Charlie Hebdo, TV reports said.

Hostages were taken in the town allegedly by the prime suspects in the murder, reports said. Dammartin-en-Goele is about 8.4 miles northeast of Charles de Gaulle Airport. A car was reported stolen this morning in a town nearby.

Yesterday, elite counter-terrorist police surrounded three hamlets 70 kilometers (44 miles) northeast of Paris in an effort to find Said Kouachi, 34, and his 32-year-old brother Cherif. The villages –- Corcy, Fleury, and Longpont –- border a dense forest larger than the city of Paris.

France has launched one of the largest manhunts in its history after 12 journalists were killed on January 7 at Charlie Hebdo by masked men with automatic assault rifles.

Reuters reported gunshots rang out in Dammartin-en- Goele, some 40 km from the scene of where police had been hunting two suspects in the killings of 12 people at a satirical weekly, quoting a police source.

The source added that police were now chasing a vehicle on the nearby A2 motorway.
