Social media support for religious conversions to Hinduism poured out, with the hashtag "SecularConversions" trending number one on Twitter India for several hours on Monday morning.

More than 1,24,000 tweets with the hashtag have already been posted by (mostly) supporters of the Hindu conversion campaign. Many supporters slammed media coverage on the conversion row, claiming it was "anti-Hindu" and politically-motivated.

While the Narendra Modi-led BJP government has claimed that it was against religious conversions, its ideological wings have been at the forefront of these conversions, claiming they were actually "re-converting" Hindus who had been forcible converted to other religions in the past. Religious conversions has become a major issue for the new government only six months into its formation.

Though the Modi government has proposed an anti-conversion bill in response to the criticism, it has come under fire too for being unconstitutional.
