Micromax launched its first Yu branded smartphone today, the device will be an online only model, and will be available on an invite basis exclusively on Amazon.in.

Priced at 8,999, the smartphone runs on Cyanogen OS 11 based on Android 4.4 Kit Kat, and is powered by a 64-bit Octa-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor. The Yu Yureka is a Dual SIM, with 2GB of RAM 16 GB of storage, supports 4G LTE networks, and incorporates a 5.5-inch IPS Display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. It has a 13 megapixel camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, and a 2500 mAh battery.

“Cyanogen is an operating system that provides thousands extra features over Android. This is the best flavour of Android we’ve ever seen. Internally, we call it Android on Steroids. Cyanogen is the second biggest project on GitHub, with over 10,000 developers working on it.” said Rahul Sharma Co-founder and CEO at the launch event.

Co-founders of Cyanogen Inc, Kurt McMaster and Steve Kondik appeared via webcast. “There was thing we wanted, a product that nobody would build, so we built it ourselves. Thousands of people came around it, thousands became millions. We were squeezing the most performance out of these phones.” said Steve Kondik, explaining how the community came together. “This isn’t just for geeks like ourselves, everyone wanted this.” he said via webcast.

“Steve and the open source community have been creating the mobile computing platform that they themselves would like to see since 2009.” Kurt said. “We’ve modified Android and enabled thousands of new features. A lot of these new features you’re going to see for the first time on the Yu Device when it launches. Over the course of 2015, into 2016 and onwards, you’re going to see new levels of innovation that you do not see in the Google Android world or the Apple iOS world. There’s a level of stagnation that’s happened in mobile computing since Steve Jobs pulled a device from his pocket in 2007, the predominant mobile paradigm is swipe, tap, and open an app.”

Speaking about the Indian smartphone market, Kurt said that he was incredibly excited to be working with Micromax. “India is the fastest growing smartphone market in the world right now. There’s a battle being fought in India, and Cyanogen+Yu, we intend to win that battle.”

Registrations will start on December 19th at 2PM, and the device goes on sale on the second week of January 2015. “This is a complete online model, built for community. The more and more people are interested to buy devices, we will be able to ramp up.” Rahul said.
